FAQs

Magazine

What is Cram Magazine?
Cram is a magazine that publishes creative works submitted by creative people in a creative way. The magazine itself is contained in an envelope, and sometimes may not take the form of a magazine at all, depending on the types of submissions received. Check out our mission statement for more information.

What can I expect to receive in this envelope?
It will usually contain a printed magazine, as well as other items – ie, the “prizes inside.” The prizes can include anything – printed works of art, textiles, small 3D sculptures, CDs of more creative work – the possibilities are only limited by the size of the envelope (which is usually around 6” x 9”) and the submissions we receive.

How often is the magazine published?
Right now that is up in the air, as Cram is a complete labor of love. We’re hoping for 2 to 4 times a year, starting in 2011, and would love to someday (soon!) publish more frequently.

How many issues are printed?
A limited edition of printed copies are available for each issue.

How do I purchase a copy of Cram? How much does it cost?
You can purchase a copy of cram by visiting our Etsy store at crammagazine.etsy.com. The price of each magazine is determined by the cost of the materials used to create it. We strive for low prices, as we’d love for everyone who wants to purchase a copy to be able to afford it.

How is Cram funded?
Cram is self-funding – all money made through selling the magazine goes right back into the next issue. Anything else needed comes out of our pockets. That being said, if you’re an eccentric millionaire (or just a regular millionaire- we’d be cool with that) looking to throw some money around, send us a line.

Submissions

How do I submit to Cram?
Send an e-mail to submit@crammagazine.com. Please include the highest resolution file that you can (if it’s an image file). We’ll accept PDF, EPS, JPG, PSD, AI, DOC, TXT, and probably whatever else you throw our way – just ask. If you’d like to submit something out of the ordinary, send us an e-mail and we’ll totally figure something out. Check out our submissions page for more information.

What’s in it for me?
We don’t charge a fee for submitting your work. By submitting, you’re basically giving yourself a little free publicity. For every piece published, we will publish the author’s name in the magazine, our website, and our Facebook page, and publish any other pertinent information you’d like – blog/portfolio URL, contact info, studio address, mini bio, etc. Also, if we publish your work, you can publicize on our blog. Gallery opening? Recently published? Won an award? Created a new website? Just drop us a line with any news you’d like to share with the Cram community (questions@crammagazine.com) and we’ll post it to our blog – as long as it complies with the third question from the bottom. Plus, you’re sharing your work with the masses, and they’re yearning for something creative and original to wrap their brains around – what could be more rewarding?

Another added bonus: If you’re published in an issue, you get first dibs on a printed copy. Unfortunately we cannot offer free printed copies for contributors (yet!), but you will get a free PDF version.

What happens to my work after I submit it?
By submitting your work, you are giving Cram permission to publish it – in the printed magazine, in the PDF version, and on our website. The copyright is maintained by the owner of the work, so we strongly recommend getting your work copyrighted. (creativecommons.org is a good place to start)

Please note we will not publish full works on our website (unless you want us to). We will, however, be showing previews of the magazine, and therefore bits and pieces of work may show up in those previews. These previews may appear on our website and also on our Facebook page.

I want to submit, but I’m very particular about how my work is going to be displayed.
Send us an e-mail at questions@crammagazine.com, and we can discuss options regarding how your work is to be presented.

Is there anything I can’t submit to Cram?
We will not accept work that supports, glorifies, or encourages anything racially, sexually, or religiously intolerant or hateful. We reserve the right to not publish any submitted work that we find to be in poor taste or of poor quality.

I have more questions!
E-mail us at questions@crammagazine.com.
